Happy birthday, Weed!

Here's The Weed enjoying a night of drag bingo, along with several hundred people at a packed brewery. (Side note: It’s shocking to see how many AARP-aged women dig drag bingo.) Wish we were celebrating like this in 2020.

I’m guessing most people didn’t have or aren’t going to have the birthday celebrations they envisioned for 2020.

Turns out, a global pandemic can put the hurt on having fun. (That is unless you’re Kim Kardashian-West and can afford to fly a private jet filled with your friends to a private island. If that’s the case, bully for you. Wear a mask, damn it!)

Today is The Weed’s birthday. Yep. My husband is enjoying a day off from work and a level of pampering allowable in a global pandemic, orchestrated by a wife who hates driving on snowy, icy streets but did so anyway. (Good wife!)

He also received lovely cards and gifts from family and will talk with everyone later today … After he finishes watching Part 2 of the Below Deck Mediterranean reunion show. Big day.

That said, it’s not the celebration we envisioned. For either of us.

I’ll admit it. I turned 50 a few weeks ago. On a Tuesday. During the already derided global pandemic. Visions of visiting Zanzibar didn’t materialize. Thoughts of renting a cabin in the mountains and having friends join us were squashed. So, too, was the blue grass band concert in the park.

For me, it was a different, more sedate birthday. Still, it was one filled with messages from friends; lovely gifts; phone calls from my family; the annual text from my friend, Trevor, complete with the photo of me eating a hot dog. (See a recent blog about my reluctance to be photographed, video’d putting things in my mouth.); and, a delicious fondue dinner, complete with a mélange of stinky cheeses. Here’s to reaching the big 5-0. Which, truth be told, wasn’t a given for me after two cancer diagnoses.

If only we could celebrate in style this year. Happy birthday, Weed!

Enough about the author. Today is a day to celebrate The Weed, aka Kevin Eugene Weed.

Once he’s done with Below Deck Med, well, we’ll continue to slack and stay home. Colorado’s COVID cases are on the rise, as are hospitalizations and deaths. It’s getting scary again.

Last year, we celebrated The Weed’s birthday with a weekend trip to one of our favorite cities, Fort Collins. There, we partied like it was 1999. Strangely enough, I have a video of The Weed singing along to a Prince song that night, Let’s Go Crazy I believe, but I can’t download it to post here because I’m super dumb when it comes to technology. Super. Dumb.

I digress.

I’d just like to wish The Weed a very happy, healthy birthday.

Having a different-than-envisioned celebration can still be fun. It just takes some planning and cheese. Don’t forget the cheese.
