I’m no Disney princess

This black-capped chickadee is the only volunteer so far interested in serving in the army of winged beasts devoted to me.

As you might remember, I decided on Sunday—after reading an entertaining Reddit thread—that I wanted to start feeding the neighborhood crows and create an army of winged beasts devoted to me.

Turns out, I’m no Disney princess. So far, the effort has fallen flat.

The raw egg I placed on the railing of my office balcony to attract the inquisitive black birds, rolled off and cracked. Making a terrible mess. (Don’t tell The Weed. He warned me this would happen. He’ll gloat.)

The pecans I placed on the balcony railing to attract the crows were all eaten by Nibbles the thieving squirrel. I haven’t seen Nibbles since Sunday. So, now, I’m worried I left out pecans for the only squirrel in North America with a nut allergy to find and eat.

Finally, the cherry tomatoes I put out to also attract the crows remain untouched.

Except there is one small but swol black-capped chickadee that swings by every now and then to eat some of the birdseed on the railing and test its strength in trying to fly away with the tomato.

I can’t take a decent photo of the ambitious beast but people have been asking for an update about Mission: Kelley Has Crows.

So, there it is. No crow force. (Yet.)

Just a determined chickadee coveting a cherry tomato and me trying to figure out how to get egg yolk off a balcony deck without drawing too much attention to my efforts.

Terrible photo. Good chicken.
