Of pandemic pounds & accountability

Exercising in the cold and snow is not one of my favorite pastimes. So, this post is a quest for accountability.

I’m writing this to hold myself somewhat accountable.

Well, as accountable as I’m ever able to hold myself. (That sounds untoward.)

Like, I’m trying for better than …

Internal monologue:Kelley, You can’t plant any more succulents during the pandemic.’ Note: After a week, I gave up and planted six more succulent pots yesterday.

So, in January, I bought myself a FitBit. It’s black. It’s slimming.

In less than a month, I have walked and now ‘run’ (as the FitBit reports. I can show you the records.) almost 100 miles. 95.99 miles to be precise.

I’m averaging 13,725 steps daily. That feels like a lot of steps to my thundering thighs.

Yet, my scale still thinks I might be a hibernating grizzly.

To say there have been pandemic pounds in my life is the truth. Sadly.

I’m trying to overcome this by getting out and pounding the pavement or at least walking briskly while glaring at small children in my path.

Yesterday, I did some research and discovered the medicine I take to keep cancer at bay, an aromatase inhibitor, can make it difficult for people to shed pounds.

I read how one woman who took the same medication worked with a trainer for six months, ate only what a nutritionist advised, and … lost a total of 1.5 pounds.

Simply, I’m hoping for better results because life without bread, pizza, burritos, nachos, grilled cheese sandwiches chased by more grilled cheese sandwiches ... Life without that stuff blows.

On top of that, we’re expecting cold weather and possibly snow tonight into tomorrow.

Going out to exercise in those conditions is like going out, well, to exercise. It’s difficult. It’s freezing. It’s sweaty. And, if I’m not careful on the snow and ice, I might fall and break a hip.

Yes. This is a concern for me now also because of the anti-cancer medicine. My bones are brittle.

For the record: I don’t want a brand-new plastic hip. So, I’m stupid careful on the snow and ice. Basically, if I could crawl for exercise in the cold weather, I totally would.

OK. It’s been written. Let the accountability begin.

Also, if you see a middle-aged woman crawling around Boulder, CO. don’t honk or cheer. She really hates what she's doing.
